It was a rough day for Gophers fans, seeing Elijah Hawkins shockingly decide to enter the transfer portal. But help is on the way. Oregon transfer combo guard Brennan Rigsby touched foot at MSP International Airport for a visit with the Gophers.
Listed at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Rigsby averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds last season for the Ducks. It was his second season in Eugene after transferring in from Northwest Florida State College (JUCO) as the 11th best junior-college prospect in 2022 according to 247sports. He led the program to a NJCAA National Championship, averaging 11.6 PPG on the season.
He reportedly had visits to Colorado State, in his home state and Samford before visiting Minnesota. He is a high-flying combo guard who likely won’t be your PG, but he can facilitate the offense when asked. With Isaac Asuma and Mike Mitchell Jr. as the only two scholarship guards on the roster, the Gophers need all of the backcourt help they can get.
I don’t think anyone wants to hear me talk about a backup guard who averaged 6.4 points on an Oregon team that barely snuck into the tournament last season, but Minnesota needs bodies right now. Rigsby is an impressive two-way athlete that will give you hard, quality minutes. With Hawkins out the door, this team unfortunately needs a lot of help and adding a player like Rigsby would be a great state.
