After entering the transfer portal less than 24 hours ago, NDSU transfer and former Waseca, Minnesota prep star Andrew Morgan has set up a visit with the Gophers for Thursday, KSTP’s Darren Wolfson had it first, which I have since confirmed with multiple sources.
Morgan is a name that might look familiar to Minnesota high school basketball fans. He is a former MN Mr. Basketball finalist as a senior in 2020-21, where he also led his team to a 2A state championship. Coming out of high school he was relatively under-recruited, receiving only three offers from Iowa, NDSU and App State, ranking behind Chet Holmgren and Will Tschetter amongst the best players in the state. He ultimately settled on the Bison.
As a true freshman he played in 21 of 33 games as a true freshman, averaging 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. The following season his role grew, starting 30 games, averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds, per-game. This season, he averaged 12.9 points and 5 rebounds and was named second-team All-Summit League.
Scouting Report:
Listed at 6-foot-10, 245 pounds, Morgan plays a very similar position to Dawson Garcia, but he attempted only 1 three per-game this season, compared to 7.3 two-point attempts. He has room to grow defensively, but he’s a talented scorer that does most of his work near the basket. There is still a lot to shake out roster-wise, but he could fit will next to Pharrel Payne, but I am not sure how smooth it would look next to Garcia.
I still is very difficult to gauge eligibility, but since Morgan graduated high school in 2021 and he’s played three years of college, I believe that he would just have one left to play with whichever team he lands with. Ultimately, NDSU head coach David Richman has a solid track record of developing players such as Grant Nelson who is currently getting ready to play in the Sweet 16 for Alabama. Morgan has only gotten better throughout his four-year college career and he could be a tremendous Parker Fox replacement.
